Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

Racism, injustice, systemic oppression, and inequality are global problems.

The eruption of state-sponsored violence in the US against its citizens leaves us appalled, sickened and feeling helpless.

What is taking place in the US today is more than protesting the murder of George Floyd. It is the culmination of generations of unjust treatment against black people and other marginalized communities.

This is not just a US problem.

Black Lives Matter

It is easy for us to ignore this when we are privileged and white. It is easy to bury our heads and act like this isn’t an issue. Ignorance is not an excuse. We must educate ourselves.

It is easy for us to post something on social media, with a hashtag, to show our support. A statement of solidarity is a good starting place – but on its own, it is inadequate and could even be harmful.

You may wish to donate money or help in other ways. This is a good starting point to start. However, we do not feel qualified to suggest where and to what organization/s or activities you choose to support. Do your own research.

We need to do something. Something positive. Something that will make a difference. We all have to play a part and work to fix.

We will try to be a part of the solution – by educating ourselves, listening, donating and acting.

Black Lives Matter

Perhaps we can take some inspiration and leadership from the young.

Perhaps at times like these, we can listen, consider and act on the words of a US president.

I hope so.

We all have a long way to go.
