Masterclass: Build Products That Matter with Radical Thinking (20 & 27 October)

This workshop will give your team a clear vision and make prioritization discussions more productive and less contentious, and translate your priorities into execution and measurement.

An online masterclass led by Radhika Dutt (Founder and Author, Radical Product Thinking)

Course Description

Are your team delivering on your vision? Perhaps your product teams are speedier than they’ve ever been – maybe the speediest in the business – but they’re not building the great product you want. Ever taken a moment to consider if speed = velocity? When you iterate without a clear vision, products become bloated, fragmented, and driven by irrelevant metrics.

This masterclass, held over two x 2 hour online interactive sessions, will explain a clear process to rethink your approach to building the software your customers use – or even the company you build. You will leave with a clear vision for your product plus the tools and steps you need to communicate your vision to your team.

The sessions guide you through the process of developing your vision, defining strategy, negotiating priorities and developing an effective plan. Discussion will focus on offering practical, defined steps you need to rethink and communicate your vision, build an effective strategy, plan and measure your progress towards your goals.

What You Will Learn

  • How to build products more efficiently
  • How to build a clear and compelling vision to align your team
  • How to communicate your rationale to your team so they can prioritize around your true vision

Course Format

This online course runs over two online sessions (each 2 hours long) with a maximum number of 24 participants.

Session 1: Introduction, Vision and Negotiating Priorities

In this workshop, we’ll start by diagnosing product diseases and discuss how to overcome or prevent these diseases by taking a vision-driven approach to building products instead of being iteration-led.

In the process of crafting a Radical Vision Statement, you’ll answer profound questions about your product that help you align the team. You’ll gain practical tools to get buy-in on the vision both from the team and from stakeholders. We’ll challenge conventional wisdom that a vision must be broad and a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal).

You’ll learn how you can use your vision in everyday decision-making and prioritization. Using a simple but powerful 2×2 framework, you’ll balance progress toward your long-term vision while managing the reality of short-term business needs. You’ll learn to use this as a powerful communication tool to align your team and stakeholders. When priorities are handed down from above, they can seem arbitrary to individuals.

This workshop will give your team a clear vision and make prioritization discussions more productive and less contentious, helping you secure the buy-in you need.

Session 2: Defining Strategy. Planning Execution and Measurement

This workshop will help you translate your vision into a comprehensive strategy.

You’ll develop a radical strategy, which requires asking the following four questions with the mnemonic RDCL (pronounced “radical”):

  • Real pain point: What’s the pain that triggers someone to use your product?
  • Design: What functionality in your product solves that pain?
  • Capabilities: What do you need to fulfil the promise of your solution?
  • Logistics: How do you deliver the solution to your users? How do you price it, deliver and support it?

In the second half of this session, you’ll translate your priorities into execution and measurement. You’ll learn about hypothesis-driven execution and how you integrate RPT with Lean and Agile techniques for execution.

Popular metrics such as the number of users or revenues may not always be the right indicators of progress. Product teams are more successful when teams and stakeholders are aligned on how you’ll measure success. Instead of measuring popular metrics, you’ll derive metrics based on your strategy, so you can measure what matters for your product.

Want to take it to the next level?

We’re also running a four part masterclass. Four 2 hour sessions covering vision, negotiating priorities, defining strategy, execution planning plus setting and managing culture change and the Hippocratic Oath of Product.
